The 17th Annual Great PUPkin is coming!

Time to dig out those wigs, cone collars, and all the velcro you can find! The 17th Annual Great PUPkin Dog Costume Contest is set for Saturday, October 31, 2015. Yep, you got it--this means we’re actually having the event ON Halloween this year! And this also means we’ll probably have a more insane show than ever before. And possibly dozens of dogs dressed like Donald Trump. If that doesn’t get you to add this to your calendar, what will?

The largest dog costume event in Brooklyn will once again be held in conjunction with Fort Greene Park Conservancy's Halloween Fest for kids. Last year, we saw a record 124 costumed canines in the contest. The judges were exhausted!

We’ll start registrations at 11:00 a.m. at the top of the monument in Fort Greene Park; the contest will start at noon sharp at the bottom of the monument steps. Fort Greene PUPS will be glad to take your donation of $5.00 per entrant to help defray event costs (PA rental, supplies, etc). Larger donations are of course always welcome!

Rain date will be Sunday, November 1, same time and location.

Fort Greene Park is located between Dekalb and Myrtle Avenues in historic Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

If you want inspiration for your dog’s 2015 costume, please explore photos on the official PUPS Flickr galleries, or hashtag #pupkin14, or photos from our Facebook page. You can also enjoy photos from previous contests on Gothamist, Fort Greene Focus, Brooklyn for Pets, and these beautiful illustrations from artist Carly Larsson. There are scads of excellent photos from years past on Gothamist. And for a real stroll down memory lane, check out bunches of photos at Kate on Clinton blog, Kizzbeth's Flickr, and The New York Times Local Blog. The official archive of all 16 past PUPkins is here

We are going to have a really massive prize stash this year, and some ruthlessly tough judges who will NOT BE BRIBED. EVER. EVER!!

And if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to help put together the largest dog costume contest in Brooklyn, don’t be shy, PLEASE VOLUNTEER. We need your help, as the contest has gotten way too big for the small handful of regular volunteers who help year after year. It’s super fun! Get involved! You’ll meet sexy, crazy dog lovers! Drop a line to PUPS Prez Kath Hansen if you want to join the PUPkin crew.
